We are going to Old Sturbridge Village Saturday. I haven't been there since I chaperoned Jay's class maybe 27 years ago?

*********************************************************************************

Sad news on the injury front. South Florida lost it's best player in senior Kitija Laska, one of the best three point shooters in the country. This is a big blow to the Bull's NCAA tournament bid, even this early in the season. Coach Jose Fernandez will do his best to keep his team focused in spite of this devastating news.

Laska had many battles with UConn but really struggled the last few times they met due to the terrific defense of Kia Nurse and Gabby Williams. I don't think I have ever seen a more frustrated player.

Hoping she can come back from this injury and gain a redshirt season and play next year.

*****************************************************************************

There was only one Top 25 game Friday night and that was another SEC powerhouse, No. 16 Missouri playing one of my favorite mid-major teams Green Bay with their crazy coach Kevin Borseth. He is always fun to watch on the sidelines and this was no exception.

Missouri came into this game 2-0 beating up on a weak Western Illinois team and then scraping out a victory against Missouri State. That last win should have told us something about this Missouri team.

Green Bay came in at 2-0, but they only lost by 2 to a decent Northwestern team and then lost to No. 15 DePaul, blowing an 8 point lead in the fourth quarter to lose 73-64. They were certainly better than their record.

In this game, Missouri had an early lead but even though they held Green Bay to 8 second quarter points, they only scored 6 of their own. The second half was all Green Bay. Once they took the lead early in the third quarter they never lost it. Missouri just looked awful on offense.

Sophie Cunningham had a terrible game with 8 points in only 28 minutes before fouling out. And the Tigers only shot 30% from the field and 22% on threes. They also had 18 turnovers and only 6 assists.

*********************************************************************************

Just a reminder, the highly touted SEC, after just a couple of weeks of play only have 5 teams that haven't lost yet. Vanderbilt is already 1-3 with one more lose coming against UConn Saturday. Florida is 0-3. And here are some of the loses this "Power-5" conference has already:

Iowa State
Utah
Tulane (AAC)
UCLA
Green Bay
IUPUI
North Alabama
Middle Tennessee
Webb
Florida State
Mercer

Not exactly murderer's row...…

Part I

UConn has played three games so far this season, but only the Ohio state game was official. However, by beating OSU handily, the Huskies kept alive an incredible streak. They didn't lose the game following a loss for the 58th time. Yes, UConn is 58-0 after a loss..!!  You have to go back to the 1993-94 season for two consecutive losses by the Huskies.  That is 924 games without two loses in a row.

That means that none of the players on the current roster were even alive when Jamelle Elliott and the Huskies lost to Louisville in the 1993 NCAA Tournament, after losing to Providence in the Big East semifinal. Twenty five years later, UConn has avoided back to back loses 58 times. Wow..!!

Go Huskies..!!
Part II

It is no secret that UConn relies on balanced scoring to win. This strategy is reflected in the field goal attempt statistics. Last night, against Southern Connecticut, the Huskies top five shooters took 12, 12, 11, 10 and 9 shots. Those players scored 26,18,16, 13 and 10 points. Geno always recruits players who can score AND pass the ball for even better shots.

What about the Ohio State game? Well, the five top shooters took 12, 12, 11, 10 and 6 shots. They scored 19, 18, 17, 15 and 7 points. Very balanced..!  Compare those totals to the recent Notre Dame victory over Penn where the starters took 19, 14, 13, 9 and 1 shots. Much less balanced.

Go Huskies..!
