The Iraqi government said that it is investigating claims that its army used the chemical weapon white phosphorus near a hospital during attacks in Mosul on Saturday

* The Iraqi State claimed that the alleged attack near a hospital was a smoke bombardment aimed at blurring the vision of IS snipers targeting civilians
* But Human Rights Watch had said images of the bombs show white phosphorus
* The Iraqi command said that videos of white clouds of smoke were 'inaccurate'

Sinister white-blue clouds were filmed above ISIS-controlled western Mosul on Saturday which has prompted an official probe into whether banned chemical weapons were used in the attack.

The Iraqi government said that it is investigating claims that its army used white phosphorus near a hospital during attacks in Mosul on Saturday.

But the Iraqi command fighting IS in Mosul said that the alleged white phosphorus attack was actually a smoke offensive intended to deter IS snipers who were trying to shoot civilians escaping the area.
