PEASE EMBODIES 2016-17 ACC GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Rachel Pease runs Cross Country and Track at the University of Louisville. After a season at IUPUI, she transferred to become a Card and participated for Louisville in distance events as well as cross country. No spectacular finishing times, no ACC titles...but an unselfish act of kindness will endear her to us at Cardinal Couple forever.
It was late October 2016 and the ACC was conducting their Cross Country Championships in Cary, NC. A tough course, for sure, and Pease was one of the 131 runners vying for the title. Pease wasn't going to win the race...but was coming up on the final 50 yardsd of the event when she spotted something she couldn't ignore.
Boston College's Madeline Adams was in trouble. Exhaustion had caused her to collapse about 30 yards from the finish. She was being supported by Evie Tate from Clemson who was trying to get her to her feet and to the finish line. As runners passed them by, Pease
saw the scenario and knew what she needed to do.
She stopped and got on the right side of Adams. Together, Tate and Pease drug Adams toward the finish line. Adams could not regain her footing. The girls got her to the line, though. It mattered not that that had finished 126, 127 and 128th in the field.
An unselfish act of kindness. Tate was in a position to finish in the 70's...that didn't matter. She stopped to help. Pease saw the competition running by the struggling duo. She decided to forego her finish and help a competitor get to the end.
Say what you will about participation trophies and ribbons. Sometimes, the finish isn't always what one desires. Sometimes, it's about doing the right thing. Sometimes, it's about embodying the spirit of good sportsmanship.
Pease was a senior and it was the final race of her career at Louisville. It will be a race, however, that she'll always remember. Peace, along with Tate were selected for the 2016-17 ACC Good Sportsmanship Award.
