In trying to explain President Trump's weekend temper tantrum, White House adviser Larry Kudlow fell back on a core element of Trump's worldview:"POTUS is not going to let a Canadian prime minister push him around," Kudlow told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union." "He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with North Korea, nor should he.""Weak" is one of Trump's go-to insults. He called Justin Trudeau "Very dishonest & weak" in a tweet on Saturday. Heading into the Kim summit, of course Trump is fixated on not appearing weak.
But do you know what really makes him look weak? The fact that he's so desperate not to.
I wonder what would happen if Trump opponents trolled the president by funding billboards all over the country with just a photo of the president and the word WEAK in bold letters. It would be an insubstantial attack on Trump, but if it attained a certain level of publicity, it might drive him nuts -- assuming the billboards weren't destroyed by Trump cultists or banned by First Amendment-averse conservative local governments. If not billboards, maybe a poster campaign in a few cities. Or maybe opponents of Trump, instead of expressing exasperated outrage like Robert DeNiro at the Tonys last night, could simply slip the word "weak" into every critique of the president. I know we're not like right-wingers, who fall into lockstep readily -- now they love Assange and Putin, hate the FBI, and over the weekend they probably discovered a hatred of Canadians they never knew they had, based solely on their Dear Leader's fit of pique. But if we had some discipline on this, could it have an effect on Trump's (very weak) composure?
Yeah -- he might start World War III, just to show he isn't weak.
