The 10th edition of the Cork Soccer Honours was held at a very enjoyable function in Murphy’s Brewery last evening.
Cork’s own Don Donovan, signed up by Everton manager Cliff Burton after a chance visit to Turner’s Cross to see an AUL final, was presented with the Football Legend Award. Donovan was an inspirational figure on the Everton side which gained promotion back to Division One in 1954 and made his international debut in the 2-1 victory over Norway in 1954.
On leaving AUL minor football, Hall of Fame recipient Ray Cowhie signed for the Tommy Moroney managed Evergreen Utd - the bridesmaids of Irish senior soccer. This was typified by their 1964 FAI Cup final replay loss to Shamrock Rovers. Celtic had the consolation of qualifying for the European Cup Winners Cup and a draw in Sofia gave them the distinction of being the first League of Ireland side to get a result in an away European tie.
Distinguished Service Award Winners
Denis Cambridge, a key figure in the development of Leeside AFC, was one of four recipients of well deserved Distinguished Service Awards. Since his 1984 arrival in Little Island, he has filled many roles in the club.
John “Langton” Fitzgerald , a Ringmahon Rangers man for a staggering 51 years, was another winner. Langton led Ringmahon to triumph after triumph in the Schoolboys League, in the AUL and in the MSL.
Henry Murphy, in his 30 years at the club, has seen Blarney Utd develop into a major force in local football. The development of O’Shea Park is the club’s greatest achievement to date, and Henry has worked tirelessly with other dedicated members, to make it happen.
Seanie O'Leary, a founder member of Castleview in 1956, has won every available trophy in the province including the Munster Junior Cup. Nowadays, you will see Seanie up at the ‘View’s excellent pitches, quietly instructing the current wearers of the famous red and white.
