 FAI JUNIOR CUP

Hibernians 1 Mallow Celtic 3

Mallow Celtic put their unbeaten run on the line at Shanbally on Sunday morning and home side Hibernians were unable to derail Mick Conroy’s charges as the visitors defeated their higher ranked opponents 3-1 in the Statoil FAI Junior Cup.

Derek Flynn was a hat trick hero for the winners and he had able suppliers in Denis Carey and Jason Flynn. Keeper Peter Carroll also impressed as Celtic advanced. Hibs, under new manager Barry McGovern for the first time, had promising displays by Jason McGroarty, Tim Creedon and Jonathan Murphy.

Flynn began his hat trick in the 35th minute. He had already lashed his shot to the net but referee John Lyne had just blown for a spotter and a confident Flynn fired that past keeper Mick Brosnan.
Mallow seemed to have the ability to take control, able to up a gear when necessary. And they illustrated that in the minutes before their second goal. It came in the 67th minute when Carey’s deceptive run took him right through the heart of the Hibs defence. His low shot beat keeper Brosnan but the ball came back off the post and the alert Flynn whacked it home for number two.

And he made it three nil four minutes later, thanks to the generosity of the home defence. They failed to deal with a routine long ball in and Flynn took full advantage of the opening to tap in his third.

Hibs had fought well at the end of the first half and did the same as the game closed. They pulled one back with eleven minutes to go, Creedon on target from a spotter awarded after a foul on McGroarty.
Hibernians: Michael Brosnan, Jonathan Murphy, Tim Creedon, Jason McGroarty, Mark Horgan, Michael Daly, Shane Fitzgerald, Darren Roche, Kieran burns, Tadhg Cummins and Nick Cloake. Subs used: Willie Ashman for Fitzgerald (51st minute) and Mark Ahern for Roche (53rd).
Mallow Celtic: Peter Carroll, Mark Buckley, Jason Flynn, Sean Buckley, Barry O'Callaghan, Denis Carey, Ronan Carey, Derek Flynn, J.P. Sheehan, Willie McDonald and Michael Browne. Subs used: Mark Scanlon for D. Flynn (75th) and Anthony Carton for O'Callaghan (90th).
Referee: John Lyne.
