55- POINT WIN LARGEST OF THE SEASON FOR CARDS

Fans who made it to the KFC YUM! Center yesterday afternoon (7762 of them) plus those watching on the ACCNE or listening on radio had to feel good and encouraged by Louisville women's basketball's 107-52 win yesterday over Tennessee State. There was a lot to enjoy. 

A 18-0 run in the third quarter that opened this one wide open. 107 points, the highest scoring total of the season for the Cards. A 58-21 second half advantage. All 11 Cardinals scoring and seeing at least 10 minutes of on-floor action. Forcing 29 turnovers and getting 19 steals. 


Of course, the opponent was the now 0-9 Tigers from Nashville. At least, they never trailed the entire contest...jumping out to a 2-0 lead and being the better squad for 37 seconds. Walz tried every conceivable combination on the court with his players...and, despite a momentary loss of dominance -- where TSU actually climbed back within four with 6:45 before halftime at 29-25...the Cards were clicking on all cylinders and gave Walz and his staff a lot of game video to go over to see how certain people worked with others when they were on the floor at the same time. 

The Final Four squad from last year had two 50+ wins in 39 games last year. A 115-51 victory over Murray State (Nov 24th.) and 80-26 triumph over Middle Tennessee (Dec 9). Yesterday's win eclipsed the average margin over victory so far this season (17.8 points) by 38. The 2018-19 Cards have been finding the hoop lately also. They've scored 373 points in the last four games. That's a clip of 93.25 a night.

Back to the game.  After the 0-2 start , the Cards responded with an 11-4 run after Bionca Dunham connected in the paint. The 11-6 lead ballooned to 20-10 after Dunham scored again from inside. The largest lead of the first quarter came at 26-14 and 1:24 on the clock...Kylee Shook getting paint points. Paint points came easily for Louisville yesterday...they ended up with 46 of them and allowed just 26.  26-17 Cards after one quarter. 

The Cards started the second quarter with Sam Fuehring, Lindsey Duvall, Bionca Dunham, Jazmine Jones and Asia Durr on the floor. That combination surrendered eight straight points, though, after a Duvall three started the second quarter scoring. 29-25 and Walz re-shuffled the Cards. WIth Dana Evans and Arica Carter coming in to replace Duvall and Dunham, Louisville went on a 16-2 run over the next five minutes and held a 45-27 lead. They went into the half with a 49-31 advantage. Durr led all scorers with 11 points and Dunham had contributed 10. Louisville had survived and easily retaliated against the TSU run and...the best was yet to come. 


They would probably prefer to forget the third quarter in the TSU women's basketball facilities. Louisville came out of the break energized and went on a 18-0 run to grab a 65-31 edge in just a little over three minutes. Carter and Jones had the first ten points in the run and the Cards ended the third with a 37-13 advantage over the Ohio Valley Conference and a 86-44 lead, ended with an exclamation point when Duvall drained a three as the buzzer went off. 

Louisville kept building the lead in the fourth no matter who Walz had on the floor. Jess Laemmle, Seygan Robins and Duvall were on the court to start, along with  Evans and Shook. Louisville reached the 100 - point mark when Robins drained a free throw with 4:16 to play and Laemmle brought the crowd to the feet when she drained a three with 2:45 to go. Louisville largest lead (56) came after two Mykasa Robinson free throws and 46 seconds on the clock.

Most of the stats are one-sides, as you might expect. The Cards did put four in double figures (Durr 19, Evans 17, Jones and Dunham 14). Duvall added nine (on three threes) and Carter had nine also. Shook ended up with eight and 14 glorious rebounds -- 11 on the defensive end, plus a cut on her throat that looked like some botched a tracheotomy procedure on her. Robinson produced seven points, Sam provided six points and six boards in just 17 minutes. Laemmle drained the previously mentioned three to end with three and Robins ended up with one point. All played, all scored...all looked good and focused. 

Two stats that stand out before we move to the FRED report. The Cards held a 27-2 points on fast breaks advantage and Kylee Shook set a school record with eight blocks. In 20 minutes. She was a busy woman, with the 14 rebounds and eight points.

FREE THROWS -- Coach Walz made a point to point out to me that Louisville was 31-39 from the line (79.5%) and had a "Three is better than two" moment when Arica Carter missed the second of two free throws but the Cards got the ball back on the miss, Carter got fouled and sank two free throws midway through the fourth quarter. YES, I'LL AWARD THE CAPITAL "F" HERE. 

REBOUNDING -- It was a 45-34 board margin in favor of the Cards and Shook was the princess of the paint with her 14. She and Dunham combined for 21 grabs and guard Robinson had seven as well. WE'LL GIVE OUT THE CAPITAL "R" FOR THE GRABBING EDGE.

EFFORT/EXECUTION -- 107 points. 48.6% shooting and just 12 turnovers. 22 assists. LET'S KEEP THE CAPITAL'S ROLLING A CAPITAL "E" IS THE CALL HERE. 

DEFENSE -- With 19 steals, 29 forced turnovers and 34.9% shooting by the Tigers...it's our first "all capital" effort of the season -- A CAPITAL "D" HERE. 

FRED TOTALS:  F-R-E-D

One would expect a huge effort and high win margin over a 0-7 opponent and it's what was delivered yesterday. Plenty of playing time for all and a solid, business-like approach provided in a game that was Sunday afternoon fun. The Cards entertain UT-Martin tomorrow night and Worldwide "Jeff" McAdams will get you ready for that one -- plus some Volleyball season thoughts tomorrow in the Tuesday CARDINAL COUPLE edition.
