CITY CHALLENGE CUP – STORY ONE

Douglas Hall 1 Ballyvolane 1
(Ballyvolane won 3-2 on penalties after extra time)

Keeper Ger Condon saved twice in the shootout as Ballyvolane A marched on to the fourth round of the Murphy’s Stout City Challenge Cup with a 3-2 penalty decision after their game with hosts Douglas Hall had finished at 1-1.

This wasn't quite the expected thriller; both sides had been showing good form in their respective leagues. The Hall were coming off an unbeaten February while the Ballyvolane boys had their morale boosted by a group outing to Prague.

Ballyvolane's first attack came in the 28th minute and they scored from it. The Hall defence was slow to react as Gary Hanover chased a long pass by Robbie Barry. Hanover won the clash with the advancing keeper, recovered the loose ball and steadied himself before driving a 25 yarder into the empty net.
The Hall though kept the pressure on and came close in the 59th minute. The Rory O'Sullivan coolly controlled another Olliffe cross but hooked it wide. They equalised four minutes later. The Ballyvolane defence got its signals crossed after a long ball. It broke out to Olliffe on the right and his volley sped past Condon who had come off his goal but had his call ignored by his colleagues. Costly!

The frequency of chances was now much higher than in the first half but no further goals
Extra time produced little of note and so to penalties. The shootout didn’t go well for the Hall. Hackett missed the opener and Ballyvolane's Byrne scored. Then Olliffe and Gary Hanover exchanged goals.

Condon made the first of his saves in the third exchange and Holland took advantage to put Ballyvolane 3-1 up. Douglas got close in the next round when Crowne scored and O’Shea drove over.

Douglas couldn't afford a miss in the final round but Condon dived to his right to make a full stretch save from Slowey and that was that. Ballyvolane go through.
