A Busy End of the Month -- SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE
On the final day of January, several Louisville women's teams were in action as spring seasons get underway and winter seasons wrap up.
Tennis Defeats Lipscomb
Louisville women's tennis continued their hot start to the season with a 5-2 victory over Lipscomb yesterday afternoon. The Cards swept the doubles matches to earn their first point and went 4-2 in the singles matches to claim the victory. Andrea Di Palma, Rhea Verma, Jelena Vujanic, and Dina Chaika won their matches, with Chaika needing a third set comeback to take the point. Diana Wong fell in two close sets (4-6, 6-7) and Ravin Neely went down in her third set 10-5. I have no idea why Neely and her competitor, Kate Popova, played to such a high score, so if anyone else could chime in, that would be great.
With the victory, the Cards improve to 6-0. Louisville is back in action tomorrow afternoon at Bass-Rudd when they take on Furman at 12PM.
Swimming Upsets No. 4 Indiana
Louisville Swimming and Diving invited their neighbors to the north down to the Ralph Wright Natatorium for Senior Day. The Cards split with the Hoosiers, with the women claiming a tight upset victory (156.5-143.5) and the men falling a bit short (171-129). On the afternoon, 17 total seniors were honored, including Avery Braunecker, Casey Fanz, Molly Fears, Nastja Govejsek, Maggie Jahns, Grace Oglesby, Brianna Price, Michaela Sliney, Sofie Underdahl, and Lainey Visscher on the women's side. Louisville's swimming and diving women won eight total events on the day on their way to the win.
The Cards will host the Louisville Invitational on Valentine's Day Weekend, their final meet before the Women's ACC Championships get underway on February 19th. More than a few Cardinals will be looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships so they can add their names to the rafters alongside the likes of Kelsi Worrell and Mallory Comerford.
Track and Field Underway in Ann Arbor
Louisville's Indoor Track and Field teams are currently taking part in the Power Five Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan. Only a few events went final yesterday, with Louisville's Kelsey Heyward taking second in the qualifying 60m hurdles. The majority of the races and all of the field events will be taking place today, and those are the events in which the Cards usually succeed. However, the field is tough in Ann Arbor, with the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, North Carolina, and Mississippi State competing. The event will wrap up today.
No Cardinal Couple Radio Hour Today
Due to a variety of scheduling issues, both with the studio and individual hosts, there will not be a Cardinal Couple Radio Hour this week. We'll work to get back on track next week. In the meantime, be sure to tune in to these pages tomorrow for a preview of the matchup between Louisville women's basketball and the USA Olympic team.
Until next time, Go Cards!
