I really appreciate that Phil and David find the time to send me their wonderful writings. I love sharing them with you.
Today, Phil sent an interesting blurb about Massey and how the top teams are ranked by that site.
David sent me all humor in this latest entry. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon. Love it.
However, sometimes it's time to bring in young blood. Both Phil and David are getting on in years and because of that, they are behind the times. We need an infusion of youth! So, starting next week, I've hired these two incredible talents to help me with my blog. I hope you appreciate it.

Both David and Phil wrote about rankings and ratings, although in very different ways.
There is a game that will possibly impact the seedings and UConn. No. 3 Oregon is taking on No. 7 UCLA in another tough PAC 12 match up.
As a UConn fan, I'll be rooting hard for Oregon. Right now the Ducks, South Carolina and Baylor have a lock on the top 3 seeds in the tournament. I can't see a scenario where that could change.
So, the battle is going to be for the 4th seed and 5th seed. Anything other than that and a team would have to go through one of the top 3 seeds to get to the Final Four.
As you will read in Phil's Philosophy, Maryland probably has the inside position to grab t hat 4th seed spot. They have a good chance to run the table in the Big Ten and hold on to that spot.
I would bet that UConn will have to battle Stanford, North Carolina State and Louisville for that 5th seed bracket. It won't be easy, but it I like UConn's chances.
GO DUCKS!!!

Remember that picture of someone jumping off a bridge? I hope there is room for the many posters on VolNation.Com who are going crazy after that loss Thursday night to LSU.
They are ready to have players like Key to transfer, some are convinced that their best player will leave for the WNBA after this season. They believe that their new coach Harper is just not cut out for Division I basketball. It's just a sorry mess over there.
There certainly are issues with this team. You can have talented players, but you need the right talented players. When times get tough, they seem to panic and go into 1-1 mode trying to win the games on their own. It's been the same story for a long time. You had Holly Warlick using the same offensive sets that had been used for 30+ years with Pat Summit. In today's world of WCBB, that just doesn't work.
I do agree that it's possible that Davis might leave for the WNBA. The money is better than in the past and if she can find out that she might be a first round pick she might be gone.
The Lady Vols have two tough games coming up. They play No. 16 Texas A&M and No. 23 Arkansas in their next two games. They really need to win one of those to even make the tournament.

From Phil
Sometimes a picture tells a story
We are all used to seeing rankings of teams expressed as a list, whether top 10 or top 25 or more. This list tells a story but doesn't tell the whole story. A simple linear list leaves the impression that the difference between the #1 and #2 team is not much different than between the #9 and #9 team. It is often the case that there is a bigger gap between #1 and #2 than between other consecutive ranked teams. The simple list doesn't tell the story, but a graph can provide some insight.
The graph below shows the current top 10 according to Massey.
(It should be noted that the y-axis starts at a value other than zero, so the differences between teams are exaggerated.)
The first observation is something that will come as little surprise to anyone following this sport, but the graph makes it very evident — three teams, South Carolina, Baylor, and Oregon are at the top of the heap, and separated from the rest by a fair gap. In addition, not only is there a large separation between the third and fourth place teams, but the first, second, and third teams are barely distinguishable from one another. This is not the usual graph, as it is not uncommon for the first place team to have a gap between them and the second place team that's larger than most other gaps.
The second obvious observation is that the teams ranked seven, eight, and nine have virtually identical rankings. Additionally, UCLA at number six is barely distinguishable from those three.
One of the reasons for looking at this is for insights into bracketology. When is a large gap between two adjacently ranked teams, it means that a lot has to happen for someone to move ahead of the other. Obviously, one winning and the other losing can do the trick, but if both win, the relative positions will also change based on the results of other games. For example, with Northwestern, Arizona and Stanford virtually tied in this list, each of them could win their next game, yet see their order change based upon an opponent winning or losing a game against the odds. In contrast, Maryland is so far behind Oregon, that it would take some major surprises to change that order.

Which team is the #1 in Women's College Basketball. Currently, South Carolina is ranked #1, but they lost to Indiana by a score of 71-57. So Indiana should be #1? No, they have lost 6 games including one to Northwestern.
But Northwestern lost to Iowa. Should Iowa claim the top spot? No, they lost to Northern Iowa 88-66. Wait, the Northern Iowa that has lost 9 games should #1?
No, they lost to Missouri State. Well, at least MSU has a 20-3 record. Unfortunately, one of those loses was to the Southern Illinois Salukis. What the heck is a Saluki? That alone should prevent them from being #1 in the country. In addition, they lost to IUPUI. I'm not sure, but that might be a team from Indiana.
Whoever they are, they have a player named Holly Hoopingarner. That earns them the #1 ranking in the country. After all, they beat the team, that beat the team, that beat the team, that beat the team.... oh, never mind.
Go Huskies..!!
