DANA EVANS ONE OF FIVE ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD FINALIST

Good things continue to happen for the UofL WBB junior guard. Yesterday we found out Dana Evans is one of five finalists for the nation's top shooting guard -- The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. This is the second year in a row a Cardinal WBB guard has been up for the prestigious honor. Last year, Asia Durr won the award.

The other four finalists are Aari McDonald (Arizona), Haley Gorecki (Duke), Kathleen Doyle (Iowa) and Chennedy Carter (Texas A&M)  

The selection committee is made up of several different groups. Members of the media, head coaches, S.I.D's and Hall of Famers. The fans also will have the chance to vote for their favorite finalists when the voting goes live on Friday.

Louisville WBB awaits the Monday NCAA WBB Selection show to find out their regional assignment for the big dance. The Cards will start in Louisville for their first two games and then are being touted as a candidate for the #2 seed in the Fort Wayne regional. Fort Wayne is about a 3-1/2 hour drive from the "Ville", so...as soon as the dates are made official...you might want to consider your hotel arrangements and-/or carpooling plans with fellow Cardinal fans.

HAILEY VAN LITH, OLIVIA COCHRAN NAMED TO NAISMITH NATIONAL ALL-AMERICANS. 

2020 Louisville WBB signees Olivia Cochran and Hailey Van Lith have been named as All-Americans. 

Van Lith is on the first team, Cochran named to the honorable mention list. 

Van Lith is tanked as the #2 prospect in the nation by Prospects Nation and the #8 overall and top guard by espnW Hoop Gurlz. Other honors: 

-- Gatorade Player of the Year in Washington
-- USA Today All-USA First Team
-- ALL-USA Washington First Team
-- Washington Class 1A Player of the Year (2018, 2019)
-- WIAA (Washington Interscholastic  Activities Association) All-State Class 1A First Team



Olivia Cochran is ranked as the #18 player in the class of 2020 by espnW Hoop Gurlz. She ranked as the fourth best forward. Prospects Nation has her #10 overall and as the third-best forward. 


She was first team Class 4-A All-State in Georgia in 2018-19

Congratulations to Dana, Hailey and Olivia!  With the other returning Cards for 2020, it looks like UofL WBB is in great shape for a very long time! 


FIELD HOCKEY PLACES 17 ON DI NATIONAL ACADEMIC SQUAD. 

Justine Sowry not only has the "Stick Girls" achieving great things on the field but in the classroom as well. 

The 2019 Zag Sports Tours National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I award recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher through the first semester of the 2019-20 Academic Year. 17 Cardinal FH student-athletes made the mark. 

Carter Ayars earned the honor for her fourth straight year. 

The other Cards:  Biz Allgeier, Alli Bitting, Erica Cooper, AnnMarie Habelow, Mackenzie Karl, Julie Kouijzer, Margot Lawn, Sam Minrath, Mercesdes Pastor, Camryn Pichea, India Reed, Meghan Schneider, Katie Schneider, Mattie Tabor, Minna Tremonti and MAdison Walsh. 

Sowry returns a strong and deep squad for the fall of 2020. The Field Hockey Cards went 16-6, finished at #5 in the NFHCA Coaches Poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. 


HOW WILL THE CORONAVIRUS AFFECT ATHLETIC EVENT ATTENDANCE?

Have you washed your hands lately?  

We've seen the virus cause tournaments and other large crowd gatherings to be cancelled, arguably to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The Ivy League cancelled their men and women's conference tournaments recently, naming the regular season champions in each sport as the ones that would advance to the NCAA Tournament. 

Ah, yes...the NCAA Tournament. 

How will the virus affect the NCAA WBB Tournament? 

Louisville usually brings in 7-8,000 for the NCAA WBB first two rounds each year. The majority of attendees are from the Louisville area, but, three other schools from different parts of the nation also participate and send fans. 

There is travel through airports, staying in local lodging facilities and, of course, extended time spent in the KFC YUM! Center. 

A lot of DI WBB fans are elderly. Myself included. The word is people over 60 should avoid big crowds, since the virus seems to affect the elderly or those with health conditions. I thought about that when I was in Greensboro recently. I didn't see many people in masks (but those referee bandits who robbed the Cards of a win over FSU probably should have been wearing them). The virus was the subject of conversation at one of the tables I sat at for lunch one day. Jeez, there are a LOT of dumb people out there. 

I did wash my hands a lot more than usual, though, and used hand sanitizer a lot. 

Could it come to that?  A cancellation, or holding events with just the players and a few media representative on hand to watch? Or, are the recommended hand sanitizer using, wash your hands thoroughly and cover you mouth when coughing and not shaking hands protocols enough. Should attendees be provided face masks? 

A lot of questions. Political rallies are being cancelled because of large crowd potential. St. Patrick's Day celebrations in major cities called off. 

We don't know what we don't know yet. It'll be interesting to see what's next. Our governor continues to tell us to remain calm and that's probably a good idea, but, it's always a good idea to be ready, be prepared and be clean.
