Softball Sweeps, Lacrosse today, WBB recap -- MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

(Today's article comes after about five hours sleep and a eight-hour drive back from Greensboro on Sunday afternoon/night. If today's article doesn't make any sense, I apologize. I dreamt about changing lanes, paying $4 a pop at West Virginia toll booths and woke up at 5:30 a.m. wondering what city I was in, and what day it was.)

SOFTBALL SINKS ILLINI, ACES

From all accounts, it was a wonderful day, weather wise and hitting-wise for the Cards softball squad Sunday at Ulmer. Louisville won both games, 4-3 over the Big 10 school and  9-1 in five innings over Evansville.

Worldwide should probably be doing this recap, he sat out there all day yesterday watching the games and never got a post-game interview in that I could find with head coach Holly Aprile. I do have pictures from Jared Anderson to share.

LOUISVILLE 4 - ILLINOIS 3

The Cards started the day against Illinois. Louisville was the first team to sprout an offense attack. Three runs in the third inning, the big blast from Taylor Roby for her seventh home run of the season, accounting for two of them. The Illini chipped away at that lead as the contest progressed, plating two runs in the fourth (another home run, this time by Illinois' Delaney Rummell) and they tied the contest up in the sixth inning, largely because of Miranda Gallardo's triple. (I'm not sure if she asked for Celene Funke's permission to use her signature hit in Ulmer). 

Louisville started the bottom of the seventh off with Taylor Roby producing a base hit, moving to second on a Caitlin Ferguson bunt and scoring on a error at home plate. Game over. Chardonnay Harris went the distance for the Cards in the circle, allowing just five hits. 

The Cards showed the ability to finish one with a win after Saturday's loss to Illinois in extra innings. 




LOUISVILLE 9 - EVANSVILLE 1


Louisville started huge with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Carmyn Greenwood recorded a home run in the second inning. The Cards kept attacking. Ten hits total for UofL and five stolen bases. Credit Ferguson with a triple in the contest and the Cards scored the game ending run when the Evansville pitcher plunked Cards batter Riley Schindler with the bases loaded. 

Roby was masterful as Louisville's pitcher, going the five innings and allowing just two hits while striking out seven Aces batters. 

Boston College comes to town this weekend, the first ACC series of the year for the Cards, who are now 10-13 on the season. 

With Roby and Harris firmly entrenched as the two starting pitchers in the Cards game plans and the Greenwood sisters doing great things at the plate, Louisville has managed to survive a grueling start-to-the-season, extended road trip for over a month and shine at home. Good to see.

LACROSSE TODAY AT 1 P.M.



Scott Teeter brings in Niagara for an out-of-conference match at the Louisville Lacrosse Stadium for a 1 p.m. start today.

Louisville (4-4) comes into the match after falling at Chapel Hill to #1 ranked UNC 19-7. 

Niagara is 3-3 on the year, hits the Derby city after a win at Binghamton 12-10 on last Tuesday. The MAAC Conference member faces Louisville for the first time in program history. 

The Cards have alternated between wins and losses this season in eight games. Also, the Cards are 4-0 against non-ranked foes and 0-4 against DI Lacrosse top 25 opponents. 

All things, then, arguably, point to a Louisville win today. 

Hannah Morris leads Louisville with 17 goals. She's scored at least once in all eight Louisville games. Rachel Florek at goalkeeper has had a great season, setting team and all-time saves numbers in between the pipes. 

This one is on ACCNE (online) and I'll endeavor to get a post-game chat with Coach Teeter and the player(s) of his choice posted afterwards. Be sure to check back for it.


ACC WBB TOURNAMENT

In case you haven't head, NCST won the Sunday championship, going on a 13-3 run at the end to get past Florida State 71-66 Sunday. Ace Konig and Elissa Cunane had 18 each for Ms. Wuf's squad.

It came down to a 63-63 score and a "free throw fest" forthe final two minutes after that. Cunane hit five of her eight attempts and the Noles missed a three from Nausia Wollfolk that could have tied it with 14 second to go and the score 69-66. A foul gave Cunane the chance to seal the win and she did by hitting both free throws. 

FSU led 63-58 with 3:45 to go....after a 10-0 run. It was the first ACC Tournament title for the Wolfpack since 1991.

Ace Konig was named MVP of the tournament.
